I studied French and Dutch at Cambridge, graduating with a First (1987-91).
After two years in publishing, I took a doctorate at Oxford University on Marcel Proust and self-justification. It was published as Proustian Passions (OUP, 2000).
After a year as a Lectrice at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris, and teaching at Wadham College, I won the Kathleen Bourne Junior Research Fellowship at St Anne's College, Oxford, followed by a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowship, held at Queen Mary's, University of London.
While there, I ran a conference on the 'State of Proust's Art', appeared on a Channel 4 debate show, Millennium Minds, and published a beginner's guide to reading Proust.
I was the Scholl Fellow of Modern Languages at Christ's College, and a University Lecturer in the Department of French, Cambridge University (2000-04). My research at this point was on indifference.
After starting a family, I spent two years in Sydney, Australia as an Honorary Fellow of the French Department at the University of Sydney, writing, teaching Proust and film, and reviewing for The Australian (2004-6).
Following our return to the UK, I moved to SHM as a management consultant (2007-09). This brought together my academic background with a deep interest in empowering people to overcome personal and professional challenges.
Since 2009 I have been working as an independent consultant and writer. Missing teaching, I started tutoring and coaching young people in 2012.
I was a fellow of the RSA (2012-19). I was a Chair of Governors at a North London state primary school 2007-12 and have been a governor at a selective North London secondary school since 2014.
Married with two children, I live in North London.
